COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class will take an in-depth look at Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (1873-76), one of the great nineteenth-century novels of world literature. The work investigates the nature of love, family, and the meaning of life. Set in the 1870's in the aftermath of the emancipation of the serfs and the beginning of Russia's efforts at modernization, the novel provides an opportunity to explore important topics of the day which Tolstoy addresses in his fiction. Discussions will explore Tolstoy's views on the nobility's relation to peasantry, women's rights, and his evolving understanding of the purpose of art, as he struggles to come to terms with his own role as an artist while writing the novel. Close readings of the text will pay special attention to the architecture of the novel and the innovative use of interior monologue. The class will include a comparison of two of the many film versions of the novel: the 2022 version with a screenplay by Tom Stoppard and the 1935 version with Greta Garbo.
COURSE LEADER
Victor Ripp was a professor of Russian literature at Cornell University and is the author, most recently, of Hell's Traces. Nancy Kanach taught Russian literature at Cornell and then at Princeton, where she served as a dean.
