COURSE DESCRIPTION
This ambitious course is designed for those who love fiction and relish its messages but are hard pressed to read one or more novels in a six-week course. Using a single text, The Penguin Book of the Modern American Short Story (John Freeman, ed.) we will read out loud and share perspectives on works by the best American short fiction writers 1960-present, including Ursula K. LeGuin, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Raymond Carver, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Lauren Gross, Stephen King, George Saunders, Susan Sontag, Ted Liu and others. Expect to cover two stories a week, each twenty-sixty minutes in length and based on a common theme. Also expect to share memories, opinions, new insights, and the joy of discovery in a class limited to sixteen participants. Library Journal calls this collection "an inclusive starting point for readers interested in discovering the power of the short story...golden for those who already recognize that power.

COURSE LEADER
Susan Matson (MS, education, Johns Hopkins University) has taught courses for Evergreen since 2018 on several topics including the short story and modern essays. She has been a teacher and teacher-trainer in the US, Slovakia, and Romania for the United States Information Service. She currently teaches English at Middlesex County College.
