COURSE DESCRIPTION
In the early 1960s, as scientists were uncovering the geology of the most extensive mountain range on Earth — the Coast Mountains of British Columbia — the concept of plate tectonics had just been proposed, though not yet widely accepted. At the same time, improved equipment facilitated the study of the Coast Mountains' geology. Lightweight Kelty packs replaced cumbersome Trapper Nelson packs, nylon fly tents replaced single-wall canvas tents, supercharged helicopters replaced pack animals, and seismic ships could reveal details of the Coast Mountains' crust at depths of up to fifty kilometers. The class will feature accounts of exceptional adventures from over fifty years of studying one of the most remote places in North America.
COURSE LEADER
Lincoln Hollister is a retired Princeton University geologist and has taught many courses at Evergreen Forum.
