COURSE DESCRIPTION

The literary and pulp short stories under the category of Science Fiction had its major beginning most notably with H. G. Wells. Previous speculative fiction involving scientific concepts and natural phenomena (the nature of Nature) also had an important role in what later became science fiction itself. An offshoot of this tradition was fantasy as adventure and ideas of witchcraft and the occult that we will not include in our survey.

We will draw upon the remarkable insight of authors such as Ray Bradbury, Issac Asimov, Fritz Lieber, Shirley Jackson, Ursela K le Guin, .... and others as we seek to analyze the concepts of the philosophy of the mind, of sociology of groups, time travel, the three laws of Robotics and other influential challenges to what humankind and aliens might be subjected to.

COURSE LEADER
Stuart Kurtz was educated as a chemical engineer and has taught in the university and at Evergreen Forum in the past. He currently worries about the future and thinks science fiction has more ideas of value than national leaders.
