COURSE DESCRIPTION
Autocracies have been part of human society for millennia. Currently they appear almost ubiquitous. This course will begin by asking: Are they inevitable? What types of autocracies are there and have there been? How do they arise and how do they function? How do we account for their rise in modern democratic societies? Importantly, how do they fall? What have been the arguments defending them as a way of organizing social arrangements from family to politics to economic systems? Our course is seminar style. Each session will begin with your questions and comments and a short presentation providing background on some aspect of our subject. As soon as an email list is available you will receive short articles and references to pieces online. There will be one or more guest resources.
