COURSE DESCRIPTION
Scotland is a small and ancient land with an impressive heritage, and the culture of Scotland has been a major influence on the modern world. This course of six sessions will interest anyone with a Scottish heritage or who plans a visit. It will review a range of topics — the geography of Scotland, its history from neolithic times through to the industrial revolution, and the relationship with England to the south. The humanism of the Scottish Enlightenment of the eighteenth century has deeply influenced America's Constitution. Then there are the notorious Highland Clearances and recently the discovery of oil in the North Sea. With a vigorous Scottish Nationalism, is it likely Scotland will divorce from the United Kingdom?
