COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class will examine how traditional news media — such as print newspapers, radio (e.g., NPR), and broadcast television networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS) — have adapted in the face of disruption by cable outlets like Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN. The class will focus on the role of video platforms, such as YouTube and TikTok, and influencers, including Joe Rogan, Dave Rubin, and Ezra Klein, and how international actors — Israel, Russia, and China — affect discourse through both mainstream and alternative media. We'll delve into the emerging ecosystems of Substack and podcasting, and the rapid spread of content across the social media platforms X, Facebook, Instagram, Truth Social and Telegram. The class will also discuss several pressing issues: Is legacy media dying? How can we determine which new media is trustworthy? What is the responsibility of online platform owners? And what are the broader implications of artificial intelligence's ability
