COURSE DESCRIPTION
Emerging from the birth of universities, the rise of new political entities, and the surge of trade in the late Middle Ages, and prodded by the ravages of the Black Death, the period known as the Renaissance transformed virtually every aspect of life in Europe while fostering the discovery of a New World across the sea. It was a time of startling changes in art and literature, in accumulation and dispersion of wealth, in profound technological innovation, in warfare and diplomacy, in exploration and international trade, in philosophical thought and religious reformation, and in the conception of humanity itself. In this course we shall consider all of these changes, as well as many fascinating people who influenced this transformation.

Because the Renaissance occurred at different times in different places in different ways, we shall examine its attributes thematically so that we can best perceive its timeless significance.

COURSE LEADER
Robert Nolan has a History degree from the University of Scranton, where he has been on the adjunct faculty, and a Law degree from Harvard University. This is the 13th History course that he has developed for the Evergreen Forum.
