DESCRIPTION -
Scientists use the word "theory" in a very different way than the general public. In this talk aimed at nonscientists, Tony discusses the main pillars of the Big Bang theory, including the expansion of the universe, element formation, the cosmic background radiation, the beginning of galaxy formation, as well as questions left unanswered by our current theory. He also attempts to answer as many questions from the audience as time and stamina allow.
Instructor: Tony Rothman holds a BA from Swarthmore College and a Phd from the Center for Relativity at UT Austin. After holding postdoctoral fellowships at Oxford, Moscow State University and the University of Cape Town, he went on to teach at Harvard, Princeton, and NYU. Now retired, he continues to do research in cosmology and has authored 15 books for the general public, including A Little Book about the Bang (Harvard University Press, 2022). He also sings.
