PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DAY TO WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9.

DESCRIPTION
Streaming from the famous La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy, join CMAP for a special presentation of L'opera seria (The Serious Work). This satirical work provides a compelling window into the theatrical milieu that fostered the Gluckian reform, with librettist Calzabigi himself a central figure. Witness the sharp wit and social commentary that characterized this pivotal period in operatic history.

Runtime: Approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes including intervals. English subtitles will be available.

From Teatro alla Scala
In recent years, Teatro alla Scala has undertaken for the first time a systematic path to rediscover the Italian roots of melodrama. After the Venetian proposals (with Cavalli's La Calisto and Cesti's L'Orontea ) and Neapolitan ones (with Vinci's Li zite 'ngalera), in 2025 it presents the meeting between one of the greatest Italian poets, Ranieri de' Calzabigi, and the Czech who lived in Vienna, Florian Leopold Gassmann, court composer of Joseph II and Salieri's teacher. His Opera seria , presented in Vienna in 1769 and here conducted by Christophe Rousset in a new production by Laurent Pelly with a cast of young stars, is an irresistible satire of the theatrical environment that well represents the koiné in which the instances of the Gluckian reform developed, of which Calzabigi himself would be the protagonist.
